On May 29, 2024, the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) hosted a webinar focusing on “The Role of Women in Peacebuilding.” The event was organized by Área Mujer a collaborative entity between GPF and Global Peace Women in Paraguay that showcases the critical contributions women make towards fostering peace, development, and social cohesion. Julia Maciel, an architect and Paraguayan representative serving on the United Nations (UN) Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Affairs, was the main speaker for the online event. Her journey from national positions to an influential role at the UN exemplifies the global impact of Paraguayan women.

Maciel emphasized that peacebuilding extends beyond the absence of war to include peace in all aspects of life. Women, she noted, play a crucial role in this process by using their talents, skills, and creativity to find solutions where others might only see problems. Women from diverse backgrounds and professions contribute to peace at every societal level, from local communities to the international arena. She also shared her belief in the importance of personal and professional fulfillment as a foundation for contributing to peace. She encouraged women to discover their unique talents and use them for the greater good. By linking individual strengths to collective service, women can become powerful agents of change.

Highlighting the importance of empathy, Maciel described it as a key quality for effective peacebuilding.

“Developing empathy through introspection and gratitude allows individuals to serve others selflessly,” she said.

For Maciel, service is a way of life, driven by a genuine desire to help others. Maciel called for new leaders who understand their talents and recognize the moral obligation to use them for societal benefit. She emphasized the need for collaboration in addressing complex issues like poverty and conflict, advocating for partnerships to achieve sustainable peace.

Women’s participation in peace processes has been proven essential at the international level. Maciel shared examples of women’s contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, where their involvement has expedited the identification of human rights violations. She also noted the inclusion of women in high-level peace talks, recognizing that sustainable peace requires the involvement of women, children, and youth.

The webinar stressed the vital role of women in peacebuilding. Through leadership, empathy, and collaboration, women are transforming communities and contributing to global peace. Maciel inspires women worldwide to harness their talents and work towards a more peaceful and inclusive world. Her dedication to her country and her work in international organizations reflect her commitment to peacebuilding.
