Empowering Through Education: Sunshine Family Volunteers Bring Hope to Kano’s Children -Nigeria

Education has long been seen as the cornerstone of empowerment, and Global Peace Women’s (GPW) Sunshine Family Volunteers (SFV) in Nigeria, demonstrate this through their inspiring “BookOnResumption” initiative. On September 18, 2024, as part of the Community Peace Friend program, SFV club members led by Umar Aminu Umar, the SFV Coordinator and Mudassir Sharif Ali, a club volunteer, distributed essential learning materials to students in Unguwar Rimi Primary and Secondary Schools in Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria. This was the second phase of the BookOnResumption program, and it aimed to support 68 students—primarily orphans and children from low-income backgrounds—who often lack adequate resources to thrive academically.

The BookOnResumption initiative was born from a pressing need observed by the SFV club members in their first book distribution in 2023. A survey revealed that nearly 60% of students lacked enough notebooks to complete assignments and take notes, limiting their ability to fully engage with their education. By 2024, this program had already reduced that gap by 15%, having empowered 136 students across three schools and communities with much-needed materials. The distribution of books, notebooks, and other supplies serves a deeper purpose: ensuring these children start the academic year with the courage and confidence that comes from being prepared and supported.

The impact of these donations on orphans and less privileged children is profound. For children without consistent support at home, access to essential educational tools can unlock hidden talents, instill values of self-worth, and fuel ambition. The SFV club member’s dedication to bridging educational gaps affirms their belief that every child deserves a chance to reach their full potential. Through quality education, children gain the opportunity to realize their dreams, becoming confident and capable contributors to their communities.

Beyond the immediate support, SFV’s family-oriented approach to volunteerism instills values of unity, resilience, and peacebuilding among students. During the distribution event, SFV representatives introduced the students to their vision of “One Family Under God,” a viewpoint that encourages peace and collaboration both within families and in the wider community. By modeling family service and volunteerism, SFV inspires students to view community service as a part of everyday life, fostering a sense of responsibility to contribute positively to their schools and neighborhoods.

For the Sunshine Family Volunteers, education is more than textbooks and classrooms; it is an empowerment tool that offers hope, resilience, and a brighter future. By addressing material needs and promoting a culture of family volunteerism, SFV continues to make a lasting impact in the lives of Kano’s children, nurturing the next generation to carry forward the values of generosity, peace, and unity.
