Soonheong’s Family, Korea (FVP Story 2021.31)
Korea has been divided for over 70 years, yet they share a common heritage rooted in the ethic of Hongik Ingan (to broadly benefit humanity). It is a painful reality that Koreans, North, and South, live with every day.
But, what can a mother and daughter do to reunite their people? Soonheong Kang and her mother volunteered with Action for Korea United in 2019. They participated in the “Unification Education Campaign at Home” in Suraksan Park. As they passed out pamphlets and booklets to passing hikers, they talked with each other.
Did you know, even small actions have powerful consequences? As mother and daughter worked together, they strengthened their relationship while strengthening their resolve in reunification. Mom reflected, "I found it rewarding while breathing the good air and meeting various Seoul citizens with my daughter, talking and promoting."
Many people encouraged them to “work hard” and some passed without interest. But the real impact was with the mother-daughter team. Volunteering together opened up an ongoing conversation about Korean reunification that they brought home. They shared stories of division and reunification around the dinner table, cultivating awareness and a desire to do something.
“Peace begins in the home,” says Soonheong. Naturally, reunification should begin in the home as well. She is looking forward to the next time her family can do more as a family to reunite their people.
