Volunteering allows us to serve people who are in need, support meaningful causes, and also create and improve our interpersonal relationships. At Global Peace Women we seek to build a culture of service and peace worldwide through our Sunshine Family Volunteers (SFV) program. The growing movement allows families to collaborate, learn, and share values while solving local community problems.
In January 2023, Folake Adedoja Obiwole is, an SFV coordinator from Nigeria, together with her family, volunteered during a free medical outreach for the aged people of Ororuwo community in Boripe local Government Osun-state in Nigeria. The medical camp which Caridad Charity Foundation organized offered health check-ups to people aged between 65- 85 years facing different health challenges but with limited financial resources. Among the services provided were checks on their vitals, blood pressure, and sugar levels.
Volunteering together with Folake were her aged father, Chief G. F Adedoja, stepmother, nephew Tomiwa Ogungbangbe, niece Precious Mathew, and other family friends. Her father helped in data collection and performing blood pressure checks.
“It was an honor for my family members to spend quality time with aged people, showing care to them,” she said, expressing the fulfillment experienced by the participants.
“Our family volunteering project helped to unite us in showing generosity, care, and kindness to the needy in our community,” she added.
Her stepmother, Funke Adedoja, a nurse, was delighted to serve aged people and bond with the family. Volunteering together gave Folake’s family a sense of purpose as they connected on a deeper level. They could broaden their social networks by interacting with other family members. Bringing together the community members also strengthened their ties and helped them to bond with each other.
