In times of crisis, the generosity of one community can be the lifeline of another. The recent donation by Global Peace Women's Sunshine Family Volunteers (SFV), under their Community Peace Friend initiative, exemplifies the impact of compassion in peacebuilding. On September 27, 2024, the volunteers donated essential clothing and materials to the Young African Leaders Initiative's Clothes Drive, aimed at supporting flood victims in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. Through this initiative, SFV continues its mission to cultivate a culture of service and peace as "One Family Under God."
The Maiduguri flood, which struck on September 10, 2024, left families devastated by the loss of lives, homes, and livelihoods. In response, Sunshine Family Volunteers—represented by SFV Coordinator Umar Aminu Umar and volunteer Simbiat Bashir—extended a hand of support, symbolizing solidarity in times of hardship. Among the items donated were essential clothing for men, women, and children, as well as mosquito repellent coils and detergents, aimed at addressing the immediate needs of those displaced by the flood.
This act of kindness served as more than just material support. The meeting provided an opportunity for the SFV members to share their mission, emphasizing how volunteerism within families can foster lasting peace and unity. Through a culture of service, they work toward the vision of "One Family Under God," nurturing the idea that the stability of society rests on the shared values of compassion and service, passed down across generations. The donation also highlighted the ability of family units to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of communities far and wide.
In the spirit of peacebuilding, the donation drive offered an opportunity for volunteers and project coordinators to discuss the importance of resilience and collective action. SFV volunteers expressed their commitment to continue supporting flood-affected families in Maiduguri, promising further mobilization of essential supplies to help ease the pain and rebuild lives. The project manager for the Clothes Drive extended deep gratitude for SFV’s dedication, acknowledging how these efforts serve as a foundation for restoring the affected community’s hope and stability.
Ultimately, peacebuilding is sustained by small acts of kindness and the generosity of individuals and families. Through such efforts, SFV demonstrates how the power of service, rooted in familial bonds, can bridge divides and heal communities in times of need. As GPW’s Sunshine Family Volunteers continue to support those in crisis, they set a remarkable example for global citizenship, promoting peace through compassion, unity, and generosity.
