The role of women in fostering peace and cooperation through service and volunteerism is indispensable. Women leaders need to be celebrated and recognized for their work and effort for peace and service. GPW Uruguay annually hosts ‘Living for the Sake of Others’ awards to honor women leaders who have been instrumental in their respective causes and service in their communities.
On December 16, GPW Uruguay hosted its fifth Living for the Sake of Others Award in the Acuña room of Figueroa of the Legislative Palace. After a long period of virtual gatherings, the ceremony was a joyous in-person celebration of women building peace in their homes and families.
This year the award was conferred to three remarkable women; Lic Silvana Giachero, Ms Lourdes Rapalin and Mrs Alicia Bengochea for their contribution to families and communities in Uruguay. The awards also recognized the group “We are Creative, We are Productive,” for engaging women in creative volunteer work to meet the needs of the vulnerable. Likewise, the Centre for Promotion of Human Dignity (CEPRODIH) was awarded second place along with its Director Mrs Adriana Abraham.
Ms Lourdes Rapalin is a teacher who has been supporting women deprived of liberty with occupational teaching skills such as aesthetics and hairdressing to improve their quality of life. Mrs Alicia Bengochea is a volunteer who has been working in solidarity for the rehabilitation of native and non-indigenous wildlife. Likewise, Lic Silvana Giachero has been working tirelessly to prevent bullying of children and adolescents.
These three incredible women leaders have brought a change in the lives of many people and their contribution to fostering peace and cooperation. GPW is proud to have hosted such women and recognized their contributions. GPW looks forward to supporting such women leaders from all over the world and through all walks of life.
