The family is a crucial building block of healthy societies. From families, we learn a lot about life and relationships. When you think of family, unconditional love comes to mind as it is the first source of love we receive in our lives. From families, we learn the meaning of love, loyalty, security, communication, patience, and other values that guide us in living honorable lives.
Families globally face several challenges including poverty, ill health, and economic disruptions, among others, that negatively impact their well-being. In recent times, climate change has compounded these negative impacts through factors like pollution and natural disasters that have often led to the loss of livelihoods and forced displacements. According to a report shared by the United Nations, “such events impact agricultural productivity and access to water, intensifying hunger and vulnerability”.
On 15th May, 2024 the world marked the International Day of Families under the theme of “Families and Climate Change”. The celebrations of the day aimed at bringing families together to foster climate action with education, information access, and community participation in raising awareness of the impacts of climate change on families.
Noting that families also have a crucial role to play in climate action, Global Peace Women (GPW) Sunshine Family Volunteers (SFV) globally took action to empower families and their communities on sustainable habits as well as climate awareness as they marked the day.
