Sharing Food Connects the Extended Family

Yoo Jeong-ha’s Family Volunteer for Peace Story, Korea

Yoo Jeong-ha has a family of 6, four daughters and her husband. Food has been a way for the family to serve, love and connect to their neighbors. You could say food is the glue that binds them to their extended family from around the world.

Ms. Yoo knows a Filipino family that has 5 children. There was a time when the mom got breast cancer. She’s cured now. During a family meeting, the Yoo’s decided they had to do something to help their neighbor. They decided to make side dishes. Ms. Yoo know how hard it is to cook, especially when you are sick. It is even hard to eat. They thought carefully about the dishes they would share, dishes that would keep and be ready to eat when needed.

On  holidays or special occasions they always share simple side dishes with elderly in the neighborhood. Ms. Yoo has a license in Korean cooking. She cooks, and dad does the delivery. In the heat or the cold, he always goes. When they make kimchee, they always share it with others, and on holidays, they always share gifts.

Ms. Yoo also teaches Japanese people Korean cooking.

Food is a universal glue that connects even people from different nations together as family.
