There is joy in giving, and as Mother Teresa once said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put in giving.” One woman took this to heart. For the last 15 years, the Global Peace Women (GPW) Mongolia chapter country representative has been engaging in acts of kindness, giving presents to the less privileged children in her community. On the first of June this year, together with her club members, who are called “Online Club Volunteers,” held an event dubbed “Every Child is Cute” to celebrate International Children’s Day. Global Peace Women and Global Peace Foundation annually partner to host this event to celebrate the precious children in Ulanbatuur.
The event brought together many youth who volunteered to play with children from vulnerable families in different districts of Ulanbatuur. The children aged between two to fourteen years old, both boys and girls, enjoyed the day and received presents from the well-wishers. Over 400 presents—clothes, toys, and children’s tools—were distributed.
Reflecting on the generosity of the volunteers who collected the presents and gave them to the children, the project leader was overwhelmed with the support she had received from her close friends and acquaintances. “90% of donations for the Every Child is Cute event consists of my friends and acquaintances,” she said.
Besides the enormous difference the volunteers made in the lives of the less fortunate, they also gained the valuable opportunity to learn various skills like effective communication and telephone etiquette. “We made a list of 150 people and called each by phone to introduce our event and seek their donations,” she explained. “I demonstrated to the youths how to properly make a business phone call, introducing the call as briefly and effectively as possible.”
Indeed, the act of giving is not only fulfilling to those receiving gifts or aid, but also makes a massive difference in the givers’ lives. Through giving, we learn to appreciate what we have and be unselfish, sacrificial, generous, and empathetic toward others. It is important to never lose the spirit of sharing and aspire to be helpful to others through such acts of kindness and embrace the spirit of us all being One Family under God.
