Training Students on Leadership

Not everything we need in life can be found in math and reading. Leadership, morality and discipline are skills help empower us to make choices and take risks that add value to our lives and the lives of others.

On 20 June 2022, Ms. Tosang Chang, the GPW SFV coordinator from India together with three volunteers conducted a one-day Leadership, Morality & Discipline workshop for students of Class 9, 10, 11 & 12 from Holy Family Higher secondary school, Kohima, Nagaland India.

The interactive program included games, conversations and lessons on skills and values like teamwork, listening, and reframing a negative experience into learning opportunities. As the volunteers and classes went through the exercises, they grew closer, more confident and introverts and extroverts alike, began to laugh and learn together.

“Some of the students displayed strong leadership potential. A few of the students who were very reserved at the beginning showed a more open attitude by the end of the program after learning how to express themselves and their opinions,” Tosang observed.

One activity, ‘The Game of Possibilities,” asked teams to make an object without speaking. “This activity really brought out the ‘Out-of-box’ thinking in them. It helped the students realize how well one can communicate non-verbally,” Tosang said.

The simple game of “Two Truths and a Lie,” was used to help participants learn how to share about themselves, and listen to each other.

The workshop also asked students to share in pairs, a challenging personal or work related memory. After keenly listening to the experience, the pair worked to identify the lessons and positive aspects of the experience. “The objective of this activity was to discover how to reframe negative situations into learning experiences,” said Tosang.

Tosang and her Sunshine Family Volunteers gave students an opportunity to grow closer as a school family and to cultivate personal and leadership skills that can enhance not only their professional and academic pursuits, but their family and personal lives.

At GPW, we amplify women-led initiatives to further a world of peace through education, service and collaboration. We are proud of our SFV Coordinator Tosang for initiating and implementing such an enriching program for the 83 participants.
