Volunteering with Grandparents” Hug’s Family Japan

Hug is six. Every two weeks she visits the local park with her parents, aunt and grandparents. But they don’t play at the park, they clean.

When three generations of Hug’s family get together, they love their community. At the same time, the family is passing on the culture of service to the next generation. For Hug’s family, success is not something grandiose, it is something profound, like having your children and your grandchildren inherit the culture of service.

The park that they visit is a garden-like place where they love to hang out. However, in recent years ittering has increased in the area. Hug’s aunt suggested that the family start volunteering to clean the park and so they did.

After volunteering, everyone sits around a table to discuss their experience.

Grandpa said, “Normally, when parents are doing good, children naturally learn how to live for the sake of others. Through 3 generations’ volunteer work together, I want to pass on the joy of contributing to society to my children and grandchildren.”

"I want to create an opportunity to pass on to my child the experience of volunteering that I did when I was student," said Hug's father.

“Understanding the meaning of volunteering might be difficult for a small child. She might not fully understand the meaning of picking up garbage in the park. But she enjoyed working with her family and this small action of volunteering might become a chance to feel the joy of volunteering and understand doing good in the community. From that small moment, she can expand your horizons for others, for society, and for the world.”

Hug’s family is cleaning the area once every two or three week regularly.

Great job Hug and family!
