The Home as the Heart of Africa’s Renaissance: Strengthening Families through Values Education

Amid the sweeping tides of urbanization, globalization, and the breakdown of traditional structures, African families remain a cornerstone of moral and social development. Recognizing this, Global Peace Women (GPW), in partnership with the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), GPF Kenya, and the Interreligious Council of Kenya (IRC-K), has embarked on a journey to create The Parents’ Guide to Values Education in the Home Curriculum. This initiative responds to the urgent need to address the moral and ethical challenges facing children growing up in increasingly vulnerable settings.

Grounded in the principles of Ubuntu, the curriculum emphasizes respect, compassion, responsibility, and integrity among other values, as central to Africa’s identity and ethos. It builds on the understanding that the family is the nucleus of society, a space where faith, culture, and tradition intersect to shape character and foster resilience. The curriculum offers practical tools for parents, caregivers, and faith leaders, to initiate and practice values education in the home, including tailored activities to support children’s moral, emotional, and social development.

This groundbreaking manual has undergone two comprehensive review workshops involving faith and community leaders. Held in Nairobi, Kenya, at the Methodist Guest House in November 2024 and January 2025, the review workshops brought together faith leaders from Christian, Muslim, and Hindu communities, along with other curriculum developers. The discussions were marked by a shared commitment to value education as a means to strengthen Kenyan families.

The African Renaissance Initiative, launched at the Global Peace Leadership Conference in Nairobi in June 2024, envisions a future where Africa’s cultural heritage propels the continent forward. Its Family Track highlighted the integral role of families in shaping ethical leadership, social cohesion, and peace. Faith leaders, as moral stewards, were identified as key allies in supporting parents to fulfill their vital roles in values education.

This curriculum leverages the strengths of faith communities to address modern parenting challenges, including absent fathers and mothers, digital distractions, and the erosion of cultural traditions. By encouraging active participation from both parents and extended families, it seeks to rebuild the bonds that form the foundation of healthy, values-driven societies.

The guidebook is not just a manual but a movement—a collective effort to nurture future generations with the moral and ethical grounding necessary for Africa’s transformation. By fostering understanding, collaboration, and shared values, this initiative ensures that children grow into individuals who embody the principles of Ubuntu: collective responsibility, mutual care, and the belief in a shared destiny.

In this journey, the home becomes more than a living space; it becomes a home academy, where parents and caregivers are the first teachers, and the lessons of character and leadership shape Africa’s leaders of tomorrow. Through this curriculum, Africa takes a step closer to realizing its renaissance—a continent where heritage and hope unite to build a prosperous and ethical society.
