Since its founding in 2013, Global Peace Women (GPW) Uruguay has consistently worked to empower women, particularly those in vulnerable situations, through a variety of service projects and educational initiatives. The latest project, Empowering Resilient Leadership, supported by a GPW Global Women Dream grant and carried out in November and December 2024, aimed to strengthen female leadership and promote universal ethical values across Uruguay.
Led by GPW Uruguay President Psi. Nibia Pizzo Sebastiani, the project engaged female political leaders from across the Americas and the world. The GPW Uruguay chapter has gained national and international recognition for its sustained efforts over the past 11 years, including invitations to present its work at international forums such as the European Parliament and the Women’s Network of the Union of Latin American Parties.
The project also focused on expanding its reach to new locations in Uruguay, particularly in the departments of Maldonado and Florida. The project successfully integrated 100 new participants from these areas and convened 80 new members to the GPW Uruguay chapter. In addition, the project aimed to raise awareness about the importance of resilient leadership and ethical values. Through seminars and workshops, GPW Uruguay trained 40 new local leaders and sensitized two key leaders to the importance of these values in building healthier and more peaceful societies.
The sustainability of the project lies in the quality of its activities and the continued transmission of GPW’s guiding principles of strengthening families, uplifting women’s value and dignity, and advancing women’s leadership. A newly formed committee and the integration of new members will ensure that the work of GPW Uruguay continues to grow and impact more communities across the country.
The story of GPW Uruguay is one of resilience and dedication. Over the years, the chapter has carried out dozens of service projects and educational initiatives, and even published a book titled From the Heart of Women. Conclusive evaluations of these projects have served as inspiration for future projects, ensuring that the legacy of GPW Uruguay continues to thrive.
As Psi. Nibia Pizzo Sebastiani reflects: “I am proud to belong to an organization that promotes universal ethical values, such as GPW.” The work of GPW Uruguay is a proof of the power of resilient leadership and the sustained impact it can have on society.
