Global Peace Women

On July 8, 2024, the President of GPW Uruguay, Psi. Nibia Pizzo, was interviewed by Dr. Soraya Rodríguez Ramos, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and a prominent advocate for women’s rights, for the platform “Mujeres al Frente” (Women on the Frontline). This interview spotlighted the critical efforts of GPW Uruguay in promoting women’s well-being, especially among those from disadvantaged backgrounds in Uruguay and across Latin America.

Over the past 11 years, since its establishment in 2013, GPW Uruguay has been steadfast in its mission to empower women and girls facing significant social challenges. Psi. Nibia, a psychologist with a deep commitment to social justice, elaborated on the various initiatives undertaken by GPW Uruguay. These initiatives include:

  • Empowering Teenage Mothers: GPW Uruguay has focused on supporting teenage mothers who are solely responsible for raising their children. These young women often face overwhelming challenges, and the chapter’s work aims to provide them with the resources, education, and emotional support needed to thrive.
  • Supporting Girls in Foster Care: The chapter works closely with girls and adolescents living in foster homes under the protection of the National Institute for Children and Adolescents of Uruguay (INAU). These girls, often separated from their families due to violations of their rights, receive care and guidance to rebuild their lives.
  • Assisting Incarcerated Women: GPW Uruguay also extends its support to women incarcerated in the Female Prison Unit No. 5 of Uruguay. The chapter’s programs aim to rehabilitate these women, helping them to reintegrate into society with dignity and purpose.

During the interview, Psi. Nibia highlighted the indispensable role of women as the backbone of the family unit. She emphasized that women are not only central to the education of their children but also play a crucial role in transmitting ethical values and universal virtues that are essential for building healthy and peaceful societies.

“Working with women in socially vulnerable situations is not just about addressing their immediate needs; it is about investing in the future of our children, our nations, and the world,” Psi. Nibia’s insights reflected a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of women’s empowerment and societal progress.

Global Peace Women seeks to foster peace and prosperity through the empowerment of women worldwide. GPW chapters around the globe share a commitment to supporting women in various capacities, recognizing that women’s leadership and well-being are crucial to achieving global peace. GPW’s global initiatives align with the values highlighted by Dr. Pizzo—values such as responsibility, compassion, and perseverance, which are integral to our approach to peacebuilding. By addressing the unique challenges faced by women in different regions, GPW chapters contribute to a collective effort to create a more peaceful world.
