The spirit of unity and empowerment came alive on March 8, 2025, at the YWCA FFPI Building on General Luna Street in Manila, Philippines, where women from all walks of life gathered to mark this year’s International Women’s Day. With the theme “Global Pathways to Women Empowerment: Transforming Societies Together for Global Peace,” the celebration drew together influential voices and organizations committed to advancing the role of women in building peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.
Throughout the day, the event became a vibrant hub of inspiration and collaboration. Organized as a joint effort by twelve leading women’s groups in the Philippines, the gathering demonstrated the collective strength of women working together across sectors. The Inner Wheel Clubs of the Philippines Inc., Global Peace Women, YWCA Founders Federation of the Philippines Inc., National Council of Women of the Philippines Inc., Soroptimists International Philippines, Zonta International, Area District 17, the Philippines Federation of Business and Professional Women, the All Nation Women’s Group, the National Sandigan Foundation, Friends For Cultural Concerns of the Philippines, United Senior Citizens, and the Sta. Rosa Laguna Women’s Association were among the key collaborators. Their presence underscored a shared commitment to building a society where women are recognized as central pillars of peace and progress.
One of the most moving moments of the day was the special recognition of former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who was honored as an “Outstanding Visionary Leader for the Country’s Economic Progress and Women’s Economic Empowerment.” Her decades of service and impact on national development, especially through the lens of women’s participation in the economy, were celebrated with warm applause and admiration.
Another highlight came from the address delivered by Inggil Ra, the Global Peace Foundation’s Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific. In his keynote, he emphasized the profound role of women in promoting peace on both local and international fronts. He drew attention to the relevance of the Filipino family model, with its deep values of unity and resilience, as a source of hope and guidance for Korean families affected by decades of division. His remarks reminded participants that women’s voices and values are essential not only in their homes and communities but also in shaping global peace narratives.
The celebration also provided a space for deep reflection and learning through its plenary sessions, which tackled a range of pressing topics including economic development, political participation, digital literacy, and cybersecurity. These discussions highlighted the crucial ways in which women guide their families, influence public policy, and navigate digital spaces, all while laying the foundation for a more peaceful and just world.
As the event drew to a close, there was a shared sense of fulfillment and solidarity among the participants. The celebration had not only honored achievements but also ignited a renewed determination to carry forward the work of women’s empowerment. Organizers and guests alike expressed hope that the inspiration drawn from the day would translate into lasting impact.
“This gathering reminds us that when women come together, transformative change becomes possible,” said one of the organizers. “The energy and commitment displayed here today will continue to drive our collective efforts toward equality, empowerment, and peace.”
In a world longing for stability and understanding, the women of the Philippines stood tall on this International Women’s Day, united, inspired, and ready to lead the way toward a better, more peaceful future.
